I developed this a couple of years ago. For some reason, whenever I touch ice cubes, or popsicles, or any item covered with frost, my teeth start to really hurt. I usually get Will to help me with stuff, but if no one’s there I just have to bear it.

Grocery store freezers are hard for me to dig through, but I have no problem with snow or ice that is outside.

Also, I have no problem with ice cubes in my mouth. If I happen to drink an ice cube along with my diet-coke, there isn’t an issue. But, I can never NEVER bite it. Other people crunching ice cubes makes me feel really gross too.

I can’t bite into ice cream either, but that’s not so much neurotic as it is a sensitive tooth thing.

Sharks.

I have a completely irrational fear of sharks. It’s not that I think they’re going to hurt me though. Boating is not a problem for me, and I’ve even been in the ocean many times without being scared. The only thing I’m afraid of is their appearance.

I mean, the shark is a pretty creepy looking animal and most people have some sort of fear of it. I never thought of it as an abnormal fear until I worked at the library as a page . I sorted the science section, so every so often a book about sharks would come up. The first time it happened I actually dropped the book and made a stupid noise.

Since then, if I saw anything about sharks on the spine I would stock the book carefully, making sure not to touch any part of the shark with me hand.

Now, if I come across any image of a shark my heart pounds like it’s going to explode and my body goes into panic-mode.

This has gotten worse since I was introduced to megalodons. You’ll have to google them youself, as I can’t bring myself to view any page with a photo of them.

Phone calls.

I sometimes have the hardest time making phone calls to people I don’t know. Before I call, I write down what I plan to say ahead of time. Even if it’s something small, like a doctor’s office or my bank.

Voice mail is the worst though. It’s like if I’m talking to a person, my words aren’t permanent and they probably won’t remember how I said everything. But, when I’m leaving a voice mail I feel like it’s going to be there forever so I better get it right. I once had to call a music school and leave a message for a woman. I wrote down five different versions, and I think I re-recorded my message about ten times until I felt the way I said things was ‘right.’

I know people who constantly shake their legs while sitting down. Will is horrible for this and I also have to ask him to stop as it’s kind of annoying. I know that I do it too, but I also do this thing with my hand when I’m walking.

I move my fingers in a way that would be like playing five notes of a scale on a piano. But, I’ll be hitting about six ‘notes’ a second back and forth. I’ve noticed some people looking at me like, “Is she aware her hand is having seizure?” If I’m listening to music or there’s music playing in the mall, I’ll move my fingers to the music.

I caught myself doing this a couple times today, only because someone at school pointed it out and it stayed in my head.

This sometimes gets expensive.

If I’m eating alone, I have to have something to read while eating. At home it’s easy because the cookbooks are right in the kitchen. But, if I eat at the mall I won’t buy my food until I’ve found something to read.

Example: One day I didn’t eat breakfast, and didn’t buy anything at school because I knew I would be going to the mall afterwards. But, when I got there I realized I didn’t have something to read. The mall I was in didn’t have a book store. But, even though my stomach was cramping up I walked all the way to a Shoppers Drug Mart. After twenty minutes of trying to pick a suitable book, I finally decided it was okay to get some food.

Can you close that?

Open doors bother me. My room door has to be closed fully, even if no one is home. And those half-closes don’t count either. If I’ve been in my room for awhile, and notice that someone didn’t close the door all the way, I’m all.

“What? How long has that been like that? All this time and I had no idea…”

This makes it especially hard at school, because I’m usually too nervous to close the door with everyone watching me be crazy.

I can’t…

Get on a bus that has a large amount of people on it, because I might not get a comfortable seat. I would rather wait for the next one or get on the non-express bus that takes a half an hour longer.
Sit behind someone because I might accidentally kick their seat and annoy them.
I can’t sit in front of someone because that will mean that they will be looking directly at the back of my head.
Sit beside someone because they can see everything I’m doing.
Sit at the back because I feel trapped.
Sit at the front because I’m afraid if we got in an accident I’d go through the glass.
Sit beside an emergency exit because it could just decide to randomly open and that makes me nervous.
Sit in the wheelchair area because I feel the removable-chairs are not sturdy enough.
Have my phone makes any sort of noise. Even the vibrate setting might bother someone.
Sit in an aisle seat as more people can see me than if I’m at a window.
Listen to music at a volume that produces any sort of sound that someone beside my face could hear. I have to constantly pull the ear-buds out and hold them a foot from my head to see if the volume is appropriate.
Hold my iPod in any way that someone around me could read what I’m listening to. This usually involved me changing songs inside my purse or jacket.
Leave the bus before people seated in front of me or they might think that I think I’m more important than them.
Leave the bus without saying, “Thank you” to the bus driver or I feel like I’ll be cursed with some kind of bad luck for the rest of the day because I was ungrateful.

These are all weird habits for a number of reasons.

If some of these conditions are not satisfied I don’t hyperventilate or anything, I just feel really uncomfortable for a half an hour. So, it’s not really necessary it’s just things that I prefer. It’s like always sitting in the same seat for dinner. Except… you know, crazier.
For a year or so my last.fm account has recorded all the songs that I’ve been listening to, and I have no problem with anyone seeing that. I don’t understand why I have an issue with it on the bus.
The whole window thing just doesn’t make sense. If I don’t like sitting at the front because of the glass, why do I prefer a window seat? If I’m so worried about being safe, why do I always choose the top of the double-decker. Wouldn’t the bottom be safer?
I am not a superstitious person at all. I think the whole idea of karma or a “just-world” is silly. Yet I have these little habits I just have to do.

Eg. When anyone says, “Kristen, can I ask you something?” or “Kristen, can I talk to you?” I cross my fingers while replying, “Okay.” I think the idea behind that is that the crossed fingers will ensure that whatever they have to say will not be negative. But, I don’t cross my fingers for anything else.
